Farr 8 Cardiovascular Inpatient Unit Renovation
Steffian Bradley Architects’ (SBA) most recent project with BIDMC was to renovate a semi-private inpatient nursing unit and observation area into an all private Cardiovascular Medical/Surgical Unit. SBA worked closely with administration, nursing, patient safety, IS, facilities and engineering staff in order to create a unit design which optimizes staff workspaces and improve the patient and family experience.
For this project, nine patient bedrooms were newly constructed, eleven patient bedrooms were renovated, and existing unit support areas were demolished and rebuilt to better support the new layout. A Lean design process was utilized to examine the current state and to generate the ideal future state plan. Warm and natural color palettes soften the unit for a patient and family focused experience. Corridors are lined with alcoves that hide medical carts and portable monitors, resulting in a clutter-free unit.
