Baystate Medical Center Children's Playdeck
The Baystate Children's Hospital Playdeck, located in Springfield, MA, is a indoor/outdoor area dedicated to play and learning. The fully renovated Playdeck, at the heart of the Children’s critical care area, provides a whimsical retreat geared toward imagination for children of all ages.
With numerous sensory distractions, from the large scale classic bead maze that twirls over the millwork to the liquid lava tiles that pattern the floor, the Playdeck encourages interaction at every level. For a relatively compact footprint, the design of the space needed to accommodate many needs and functions. The Playdeck functions as a play space, movie night room, reading getaway, 94.7 WMAS Children’s Hospital Radiothon home base, Griffin’s Friend’s Learning Center, Art Therapy Room, and more.
The exterior play space provides a chance for those children, many of whom have been in the hospital for weeks or months at a time, to get a breath of fresh air in a colorful, fresh, and safe environment. The Playdeck inside and out is the dream realized for the Children’s Hospital: Reach, Embrace, Amaze, Care, and Heal.

Special Design Elements:
Special features include the lighting control system, which allows staff or children change the levels or colors of the feature lighting in the Playdeck. Another unique detail is hidden within the millwork. ‘Griffin’s Friend’s Hospital’ is a mini-hospital enclosed in the millwork that has dolls, mini-x-ray machines, and small scale medical instruments that staff can use to demonstrate the procedures the children may undergo
while in the hospital, helping alleviate patient’s anxiety.
