China Merchants Qianhai Free Trade Center

2014 was a year of breakthroughs for development in Qianhai, China. This rapidly expanding hot spot saw extensive new construction, financial innovations, property development, and institutional progress. 20 important projects were initiated by Qianhai in December.

Investment for these new projects totaled more than $16 billion (US). They will include permanent construction projects such as the Qianhai Legal Tower, CIMC International Maritime Business Center, SF Headquarters, Qianhai International Financial Center, and China Merchants Group Qianhai Free Trade Center. Qianhai believes these developments will establish the city as a world-class business destination.

Steffian Bradley Architects (SBA) competed with five other international architectural firms to design the Free Trade Center. Tasked with developing a presentation in just 45 days, SBA created designs for the entire site, including a two-minute video and a physical model of our proposed buildings. While the project was awarded to a local firm, SBA has been invited to participate in a design presentation for the residential components of the project.

The Qianhai Free Trade Center will be located in the Shenzhen Qianhai Free Trade Zone, a site of 15 square kilometers that has been planned as a central feature of the Pearl River Delta. The Free Trade Center, adjacent to Shenzhen’s city center and its amenities, will capitalize on the thriving business and tourist industries of the area.

SBA’s proposed design for the mixed-use development engages references to the nearby seascape and trade port, with office buildings graphically imitating the port’s shipping cranes. Representing the strength and elegance of these cranes, the buildings would create a visual metaphor for the Free Trade Center as a catalyst for the busy import and export business of Qianhai’s trade shipping. Over 150 meters high, the office tower spans the sky like a massive crane, offering a dramatic portal to Shenzhen city.
