Healthcare Meets Retail: Be One of the First to See Mass General Assembly Row Primary Care Facility
Steffian Bradley Architects (SBA) recently completed the design and construction of Mass General Assembly Row Primary Care facility located at Assembly Row in Somerville, MA. Mass General Assembly Row Primary Care is an innovative, team-based primary care practice located in Somerville that aims to deliver high quality, integrated, patient-centered primary care. Located in Somerville, Mass General Assembly Row Primary Care provides comprehensive adult primary care services to patients in one convenient location, a short one block walk from the MBTA Orange line station!
Being located within one of the region’s new retail establishment, in an area that literally gave birth to the Industrial Revolution, it was important that the design of the facility reflect its environment. To achieve this, the team borrowed principles often found with branded environments and retail design and integrated them with those often found in healthcare design. Through this process, the team was able to develop a contemporary industrial space with rusticated charm by utilizing color for branded moments and juxtaposing those moments with large graphics, warm rustic woods, soft oxidized metals and clean intentional geometries.
While on-set of last month’s photoshoot, we were able to use our new 360 degree camera to capture different elements in the space. We are excited to be able to offer you a sneak peek inside the location before the facility open’s later this fall!
The exam room design was based on a previously adapted and tested model that Mass General has found to be successful in several of their facilities for both clinicians and their patients and families. This particular exam model focuses on the value of the consult function where patients and clinicians will spend most of their discussion at the consultation work area and will move to the exam table when needed. They’ve found that this model takes the focus off the exam table itself, in turn providing improved one-to-one interaction and establishes the trust needed between patients and clinicians.
Neighboring the group of Exam Rooms is a large, open “hub” where all members of the care team are situated in groups of open workstations. This model allows for close collaboration for clinical team members and showcases three different levels of privacy (from open to closed) allowing for both collaborative and heads down work within one open area.
